Health Promotion

Last week’s  CHCChat, a weekly, Twitter-based discussion about various topics in community-oriented primary health care, was about Health Promotion.   The World Health Organization defines Health Promotion as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health”.    First International Conference on Health Promotion was held in Ottawa back in 1986.  It recognized important prerequisites to health like shelter, food, education, sustainable resources and social justice. It struck me as I read this that Health Promotion isn’t…

It’s A Small World

It’s A Small World

The month of October continues to be a busy month for the Early Detection Program. On Saturday October 15th I had the opportunity to attend Dress Barn’s Annual Women’s Wellness Event.  Being a women’s clothing store, the employees were extremely involved in promoting breast cancer awareness during the month of October! I was happy to encounter a few women throughout the day that qualified for our program. Again, the EDP program is a grant program based at the Community Health…

I sat for a moment thinking about how I landed on this invitation list but believing everything happens for a reason, I cleared the space in my calendar and the next day was…

A perfect day, A perfect walk

A perfect day, A perfect walk

This past weekend CHC staff and members from the 2011 AmeriCorps group, came together to participate in the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Walk event.  A group of CHC staff woke up bright and early to participate in the walk. They cheered each other on and shared the spirit and energy of the event as walkers and runners alike made their way to the finish line. Meanwhile, AmeriCorps members were gearing up at the finish line to cheer on walkers completing the full marathon…
